Mentoring
At Nova Southeastern University I teach undergraduate and graduate courses in biology, genetics, and research methods, and advise several terrific students in independent research projects. My role in The Getty Lab at Michigan State University included collaborating and co-mentoring EEB (ecology and evolutionary biology) graduate students including Sara Garnett and Michael Kuczynski. As a Ph.D. candidate at The University of Texas, I also advised two students through the university's Intellectual Entrepreneurship (IE) program, supervised an undergraduate honor's thesis, and worked closely with six other UT undergraduates who assisted lab and field aspects of my dissertation studies.
Outreach
Science Under The Stars (SUTS). In 2009 I co-founded an outdoor public lecture series at Brackenridge Field Laboratory (Austin, Texas). I also chaired the organizing committee from 2009-2013. Now entering its eighth year, SUTS has hosted >50 speakers and hundreds of visitors from all ages and backgrounds. SUTS talks are organized and given by graduate students, helping them to develop valuable outreach skills while cultivating community support for science. A blog post I wrote describing this program is located here. You can also visit the SUTS webpage to learn about its current organizers and events.
At Michigan State University, I collaborated with the Data Nuggets program to develop classroom learning activities based on ongoing research. I also coordinate a partnership with REACH!, a local community art center, to introduce young artists to scientific illustration, data visualization, and organismal and evolutionary biology.
